With Lambda, you can run code for virtually any type of application or backend service – all with zero administration. Just upload your code and Lambda takes care of everything required to run and scale your code with high availability. You can set up your code to automatically trigger from other AWS services or call it directly from any web or mobile app.
You can use AWS Lambda to launch new business models altogether. Take our own example – we offer quite a few free healthcare software. We are able to do so because we use AWS Lambda and we do not pay for anything unless our customers are using the software. This allowed us to launch an entirely new business model (for us) – free software for our healthcare customers that allows us to gain more and more customers each month.
What can AWS Lambda handle for me?
First and foremost, AWS Lambda lets you run code without provisioning or managing servers. This means that when you or your IT team is handling web or mobile applications within your organization, you do not need to worry about servers, provisioning them, managing servers, monitoring them etc.
You also do not need to pay for server resources if you do not use them. This means that you only pay for the time that your team (or users) are actually using the application(s). How great is that?
With AWS Lambda, you can run code for virtually any type of application or backend service – all with zero administration. All your IT team has to do is to just upload your code and Lambda takes care of everything required to run and scale your code with high availability.
Combined with API gateway, the possibilities are endless.
If your organization is already using Amazon Web Services, your team can set up their code to automatically trigger from other AWS services. If your organization is not using AWS, no problem – your team can call AWS Lambda directly from any web or mobile app. If you have applications sitting behind a firewall, that’s also not a problem as you can tie in AWS Lambda with AWS Direct Connect. AWS Direct Connect is a network service that provides an alternative to using the Internet to utilize AWS cloud services. AWS Direct Connect enables customers to have low latency, secure and private connections to AWS for workloads which require higher speed or lower latency than the internet.
How can AWS Lambda help you save money?
Very simple. You pay only for the compute time you consume – there is no charge when your code is not running. What you do not notice up front is that it cuts down a LOT of time that your IT team would typically spend on managing and monitoring servers. Labor costs are always more expensive than server costs. This is a direct cost saving that you can put right into your bottom line.
How about sensitive information? Are they stored in the cloud?
Amazon Lambda is listed on the AWS HIPAA Eligible Services List. Your organization can sign Amazon’s Business Associates Agreement (BAA). You would have to fulfill the AWS shared responsibility model and you can use Lambda with protected health information (PHI).
You might be worried about your company’s codebase. AWS Lambda stores code in Amazon S3 and encrypts it at rest. AWS Lambda performs additional integrity checks while your code is in use. This way, your code is safe and belongs to YOU.
